I have committed not to fly unless absolutely necessary. I find flying largely unnecessary and hugely damaging to the environment. The last time I took a flight was for my honeymoon in 2016. Fortunately, flying is not a regular requirement of my professional life, which relieves some pressure. I find it more difficult in my personal life as I have friends and family across Europe. It is less convenient to drive, but when you account for the efficiencies associated with taking the family, it greatly reduces overall emissions and is worth taking an extra day off work. I expect that 2020 will be another flightless year and I look forward to more of the same in 2021!
I am a sustainability professional, and have been working in higher education for the past ten years. Prior to this, I worked in a range of sustainability-related roles across the private and public sector. I am currently fortunate to hold the position of Deputy Head of Environmental Sustainability within Estates Services at the University of Oxford.
