For two years I refused to fly, and only went to conferences and meetings within ground or sea transport range. Now I use Skype as much as possible, and when I have to fly I try and chunk together meetings with trains and ferries whenever I can. I do not take flights within a country at all.

Not only is it ecologically more sensible, but I suffer less from circulation problems, backaches, and anxiety.

I run a not-for-profit biobank for the model organism arabidopsis. We support research all over the world via materials and databases. We were a pioneer in open access transcriptomics from the turn of the century, and have long been advocates for open source data and FAIR principles (before they had an acronym).
