An academic culture that requires and incentivizes airplane travel is unsustainable and unethical. I conduct international field research, and this cannot be helped as long as I am in my chosen career. How to reduce my carbon footprint as much as possible?

(1) I am limiting myself to two research trips per year and making those trips as long as possible to maximize their research yield.

(2) I am attending one major conference per year – and no more.
