My understanding is that we need to reduce our carbon footprint dramatically in the near future, but that there isn’t any prospect for making flights green in the near future. So given its heavy carbon footprint, I’ve been flying less. At the same time, I love trains and tend to get more work done on trains than anywhere else – including my office. By comparison, flying involves a stressful day getting to and getting through airports. Recently I’ve been making my trips within Europe (including the UK) by train. I’d like to encourage others in academia to travel by train more, and would like to see more sleeper train opportunities.

My area of research is category theory, which studies the common features and relationships between different areas of mathematics (a bit like linguistics does for languages).
