For years I have gone to conferences only when I can get there by train, bus, or carpool. I also decline to fly for pleasure.
Even some colleagues and friends who are strong environmentalists find this stance exotic and antediluvian; but my sense is that it is beginning to sink in for many that in most cases flying is plainly incompatible with personal and professional responsibility to humanity.
I have: done academic work on municipal engagement in climate action; developed and taught graduate and undergraduate courses on environmental policy, environment planning, and environmental studies; and worked for a state agency developing climate change mitigation policy and programs.
