Flying is so disproportionately carbon intensive and, at the same time, it is such an ordinary part of academic life; we don’t always realize how destructive it is. I stopped flying to give talks before COVID, and I am glad everyone has learned Zoom so that we can replace some wasteful air travel with virtual conferencing. I am also leading a group on reducing the carbon impact of academic travel at Cornell–and it’s an uphill struggle!

I write about what the humanities can contribute to the climate crisis, and I have published a piece on the carbon impact of academic air travel.
