I’ve always tried to take the train whenever possible. Now that I reached a stage in my career where I no longer depend on attending many conferences etc., I feel I should give a good example by even further drastically reducing how much I fly.

I hope that more overnight trains will be introduced again to make longer trips more convenient without flying. I also hope to convince more people that taking the train rather than flying is a gain in quality time (where you can get work done, for example) rather than a sacrifice.

I work on numerical modelling of the dynamics of the Earth’s mantle. After my PhD in the United States, I worked in Taiwan, Germany, United States, Japan, and Norway before coming back to Germany.
