I choose to attend conferences that are local, or to which I can train and bicycle. I have always been a bicyclist and have a multi-modal commute (bicycle and ferry).
In June 2019, I took a train from Seattle to Klamath Falls, Oregon and bicycled solo some 400 miles to Davis, California, taking the train back to Seattle. This allowed me to see and experience the trip as being through a particular geography and, yes, I kind of wrote my paper as I bicycled. I do still fly, but I hope that people start creating conferences and conference locations that people can get to in the summer and/or by alternative means of travel.
My work has been in ecocomposition and ecocriticism, along with sustainability and modern slavery.
