The Center for Environmental Politics’ mission is to produce and disseminate social science research on environmental politics, policy, and governance at all levels. Says Founding Director Aseem Prakash, “We are working to lead by example and influence others toward a climate ethic.”
To reduce the carbon impacts of its work, the Center has reduced the number of monthly conferences on site, and buys carbon offsets for all visiting speakers and scholars. In addition, carbon emission calculations will be used to determine needed offset purchases for an upcoming graduate student conference.
Center leaders are also working with the Western Political Science Association and the American Political Science Association to develop policies supporting reduced carbon impacts of annual conferences. Innovations may include technologies supporting remote participation, and carbon offsets incorporated into event registration fees.
