“An estimated 15% of the CO2 emissions caused by the university is generated through work-related travel.”
University-wide policy:
- All travel bookings go through a central office, which keeps a list of cities which are within 6 hours by train or bus. Employees are obliged to take the train for travel to these cities.
- For cities within 8 hours by train or bus, ground travel is preferentially listed and encouraged.
- All plane flights are charged an additional 50 Euro fee for carbon offsetting.
- The university attempts to spread its travel policy (although its program for doing so is apparently ad hoc)
The Ghent policy grew from multiple grassroots efforts within the university itself, and also grassroots efforts around the world that have been raising awareness of flying emissions.
